Clean up Stock on Machining Bar Formula

Writer's picture: Team John Galt SteelTeam John Galt Steel

When choosing the right Outer Diameter size for machining hot rolled bar, in order to remove all surface imperfections, decarb, seems, laps, etc. the industry uses a 1.6% per side minimum (based on nominal OD) to calculate a finished maximum OD for full clean up.

For example: If your finish size is 6" od you cannot use 6"od to clean up to 6"od you would need to use 6.25" od in order to safely clean up to 6" od .

Here is a simple formula:

OD tolerance: Customer Finish size divide by .968
